**Update MARCH 2020: I am not taking clients during 2020/21. Do get in touch if you would like me to suggest any doula colleagues to you**
What is a Doula?
According to Doula UK a doula is
‘an experienced woman who offers emotional and practical support to a woman (or couple) before, during and after childbirth. A doula believes in “mothering the mother” – enabling a woman to have the most satisfying and empowered time that she can during pregnancy, birth and the early days as a new mum. This type of support also helps the whole family to relax and enjoy the experience’
I trained with Nurturing Birth in 2014 as a birth and postnatal doula. Part of my desire to become a doula was fuelled by my personal experience of using a doula for my second birth coupled with my existing knowledge and experience working with families in early parenthood as a heath visitor. Compared to my first pregnancy and birth (where I had little support culminating in an unsatisfactory birth), second time around the input of my doula transformed my experience of birth and early motherhood into an empowering and unforgettable journey.
I am keen to continue the doula tradition in helping women to achieve a birth of their choice and have a smooth transition into parenting whether it is first time or seventh time around!
I support families as a mentored birth and postnatal doula in Leeds, Bradford, Harrogate and the surrounding areas. As a birth doula I will support you throughout your pregnancy and the birth itself. As a postnatal doula I will work flexibly with you to offer you a combination of practical and emotional support at your home following the arrival of your new baby. This may include helping with older children, preparing meals, light house work or helping establishing breastfeeding AND massage of course!
I am happy to meet with you (free of charge) to discuss your requirements and negotiate a support package which suits your needs. Because I will be in my mentored period (working under the indirect supervision of an experienced doula), I will be offering my postnatal services at a reduced rate (£10 per hour), but I would ask that you book me for a package of at least 20 hours. My fee as a birth doula (which will include 2x two hour in-depth birth preparation sessions, a pregnancy massage, being ‘on call’ for you between 38 and 42 weeks, attending the birth of your baby plus one postnatal visit) is £450. You will also receive unlimited email and phone support from booking me until your final postnatal visit. I will refund £50 of this fee once your paperwork has been returned to my doula mentor (please ask for details). Recognised doulas will charge around £1000 for this service.
